Responding to COVID-19

The global health crisis has forced AmericaShare’s work to shift as we address the challenges faced by community members in Mukuru and Red Hill.

Kenya

Thanks to Micato Safaris and the generosity of AmericaShare and Huru donors, we have distributed reusable face masks to every sponsored student and their family in Mukuru.

As we distributed masks we learned that many families, currently unable to find work, were in critical need of food. We quickly developed a plan to distribute food packages through a local grocery store. The package contains non-perishable items that are a staple in Kenyan’s diets including rice, beans, maize flour, wheat flour, and cooking oil.

Once these urgent basic needs were met, we returned our focus to our mission: education. This has never been more urgent or challenging, as Kenya closed schools for all of 2020.

In response we distributed smartphones loaded with learning resources to students in the school sponsorship programme, along with the data to make online learning accessible. We created online classes for students and set up online study groups, so students remained connected, engaged, and while schools were closed.

South Africa

Education is at the heart of everything AmericaShare does and remains the focus of our work in Red Hill. Connecting children with learning resources, providing help with homework through Whatsapp, and distributing study guides and books to students have kept our team connected with the community.

We also distributed masks to our library visitors to ensure everyone remains safe and healthy.
